Born in Lebanon in 1883, Kahlil Gibran is known not only as a writer, but also as a poet, philosopher and visual artist, producing in his lifetime dozens of writings in both Arabic and English, and crafting paintings and sketches now on display in museums around the world. Influenced by writers like William Blake and Francis Marrash, his work is known and loved for its exploration of universal themes such as justice, love, and religion, and its deft rendering of symbols. Gibran spent the later years of his life in New York City, where he wrote The Prophet.
